Gyasi Ross - Native American Musician

Isskootsik

Before Here Was Here—we’re connecting the past to the present and even the future on this album—not just for Natives, but for everyone, this is schooling over beats. For folks who think that Native people don’t have anything to say in 2015, give this album a listen.

Gyasi Ross, Native American Hip Hop artist, has released his Spoken Word album Isskootsik (Before Here Was Here) which marks Gyasi Ross’ recording debut and features his distinctive, bold, spoken word style and lyrical delivery over an array of brilliant, and contextually perfect beats and compositions from Cabin Games producer, Kjell Nelson. The record features Ross touching on topics as nuanced and relevant as Native American fishing rights, mass killings and the invasion of Christian settlers. With appearances by Slug from Atmosphere and Aboidun Oyewole of The Last Poets, if Gyasi Ross wasn’t already on your underground hip-hop radar, then he should be.

It’s storytelling and it’s poetry. I’m a product of the hip hop generation, I grew up with hip hop music and I love it, but I don’t consider myself a rapper. I was trying to find devices to carry stories.
